 David Q and A

  1. How would you describe your style of practice or your approach to dealing with clients?
I look to achieve outcomes in a pragmatic way, making the complex as simple as possible and making the legal process a contributor to, and not a barrier to, the quick and efficient dispatch of transactions.
  2. If you had a single piece of advice to give a person in relation to commercial property acquisitions what would it be?
Do your due diligence but remember discovering lots of problems can provide opportunities for purchasing well if you can rectify post-settlement. Others may have been put off by them.
  3. What has had the biggest impact on how you practice law over recent years?
Without a doubt technology. Particularly for overseas clients, emails, pdf files and cell phones make exchanges of communication often more rapid than here with overnight responses waiting for you in the morning.
  4. When you are not being a lawyer what do you like doing most?
I am actively involved with thoroughbred racing both as Vice President of the Wellington Racing Club and as an owner/breeder. I get a lot of pleasure seeing horses I've bred go on to be good racehorses, particularly the ones I keep! Away from the track I enjoy food, wine and good company.
  5. Who gave you the best piece of advice in relation to your legal career and what was it?
My Partner Rod Gillespie’s late father Neill Gillespie – “Always take an option, never give a guarantee”.
  6. What is your favourite quote?
“The big print giveth and the small print taketh away”. – Tom Waits.
